It?ˉs called casting because the motion is very similar to the motion you make when you cast a fishing line. Most players who cast, do so not on purpose, but because they have to. There are many swing faults that basically force you to cast to make it to impact, such as an over-the-top swing.
Markers showing distances are usually included on a practice range to benefit the golfer. There may even be a practice course (often shorter and easier to play than full-scale golf courses), where golfers practice to measure how far they can hit with a specific club or to improve their swing technique.
