And there wasn't a lot of things I like about it," Woods said in a video conference call for his Chevron World Challenge. "But I had to do it, and I did it, and grateful that I did.
"I think that I come from a much better place, much more grounded place now than I ever have before."
The Chevron World Challenge, to be played December 3-6 at Sherwood Country Club, will be his final tournament of the year. Woods next plays November 4 in Shanghai at the HSBC Champions, his last chance to win an official PGA Tour event. Then he's off to Melbourne to defend his title in the Australian Masters before closing out the year at Sherwood.
Woods is a four-time winner of his tournament, although he hasn't played the last two years. He was recovering from knee surgery in 2008, and he missed last year because it was one week after the car accident that exposed his extramarital affairs and shattered his image as sports' most impeccable star.
Woods took four months off from golf to go through rehab, returning at the Masters. He tied for fourth at Augusta National, and he tied for fourth at the U.S. Open. Those were his two best results of the year, however, as he failed to win a tournament and did not even reach the FedEx Cup finale at the Tour Championship.
He was divorced on August 23 from Elin Nordegren. Woods said his two children are getting adjusted to their new living conditions.
"I think everyone's certainly more at peace, and so am I," Woods said.
His tournament has one of its best fields, with defending champion Jim Furyk and Woods joining a dozen other Ryder Cup players. The list includes three major champions _ all but Masters champ Phil Mickelson _ along with newcomers Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson.
The two sponsor exemptions were awarded to Camilo Villegas and Stewart Cink.
In his last performance, Woods was 9 under through 15 holes when he beat Francesco Molinari in singles, playing the final seven holes in 7-under-par. Europe still won the Ryder Cup, although Woods had his best week in the event, going 3-1.
"My game is coming around," Woods said. "so the way I played at the Ryder Cup ... I know I have two more events prior to the Chevron event. Hopefully, I can get two more Ws before I get to Chevron, and see what happens."
Along with his personal strife, Woods went through three teachers this year _ Hank Haney and Sean Foley, with Woods as his own instructor for a three-month stretch in between.
He said he is still taking in the concepts of Foley, a Canadian-born swing coach based in Orlando, Florida, but that the changes are coming together quicker than previous times when he revamped his game.
"I don't have it all dialed in yet," Woods said. "But I figured if I could play the way I did in the singles match, which I hadn't done that all year, that's a positive sign."

National Football League's Oakland Raiders

Al Davis, the outspoken Hall of Fame owner of the National Football League's Oakland Raiders, died on Saturday at the age of 82, the team's official website reported.
The Raiders gave no details of the death of one of the leading personalities in the NFL but said a statement would be made later on Saturday on the site (http://www.raiders.com/).
Davis was hired as coach and general manager of the Raiders at the age of 33 and later became principal owner.
The Raiders won three Super Bowls and had 28 winning seasons, including 16 in a row from 1965-1980, during his 48 years with the team.
Davis was also commissioner of the American Football League (AFL) in 1966 and was viewed as a driving force in its merger with the NFL that created the modern competition.
"Al Davis's passion for football and his influence on the game were extraordinary," said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in a statement.
"He defined the Raiders and contributed to pro football at every level. The respect he commanded was evident in the way people listened carefully every time he spoke.
"He is a true legend of the game whose impact and legacy will forever be part of the NFL," Goodell said.
Davis could also be defiant. After a lengthy court battle, he took the Raiders away from Oakland to Los Angeles from 1982 to 1994 before returning the franchise to its original home.

Russia's top jumper

MOSCOW - Pavel Karelin, Russia's leading ski jumper, died in a car crash on Sunday. He was 21.
"Pavel Karelin's tragic death is a huge and irreplaceable loss for Russian sport," the country's ski jumping federation said in a statement.
"He was the leader of our team; one of our big hopes (for the 2014 Sochi Olympics)," added Russian Olympic Committee department head Alexander Grushin.
Police said Karelin died in the early hours when his Mercedes collided with another vehicle on a motorway near Nizhny Novgorod, some 570 kms East of Moscow.
Karelin had competed regularly on the World Cup circuit. His best result was second place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in January.
He took part in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, finishing 10th in the team competition and 33rd in the individual event.
